Raising awareness on the impact of greenhouses especially Hydrofluorocarbons on health

The Biden administration has concluded the first climate change-related conviction in the history of the United States. Michael Hart, a 58-year-old American businessman from San Diego, pleaded guilty in a federal court, admitting that he conspired to illegally import a potent greenhouse gas known as hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) into the United States from Mexico to sell them for a profit. This is a violation of regulations intended to slow climate change. Greenhouse gases accumulate in the atmosphere and trap the sun’s heat in the Earth’s atmosphere, causing global warming. This phenomenon causes warmer air, which can hold more water, leading to increased evaporation and more water available for rainfall in the atmosphere. This could lead to heavier rainfall and consequently flooding. Another effect of global warming is rising sea levels, which can cause flooding too.
Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) have become a common component in our daily lives, primarily used in refrigeration, air conditioning, and as aerosol propellants. While they were initially introduced as a safer alternative to ozone-depleting substances, HFCs have their dangers, particularly concerning human health.
Rising temperatures can lead to more frequent and severe heatwaves, which can cause heat-related illnesses and deaths. The resultant climate change can also impact air quality, leading to respiratory problems like asthma, bronchitis, and other chronic respiratory diseases. Exposure to high concentrations of HFCs can cause dizziness, headaches and, in extreme cases, asphyxiation. Improper disposal or accidental release of HFCs can lead to localized exposure, posing risks to workers and communities. The average atmospheric lifetime of HFC is about 15 years. During this time, they continue to contribute to the greenhouse effect and climate change. The persistence of these chemicals in the environment means that their health impacts can be long-lasting and widespread.

Despite international agreements like the Kigali Amendment to phase down HFCs, their use is still growing, particularly in developing countries. This continued use poses a challenge for global health, as the benefits of reducing HFC emissions are not immediately realized. Effective regulation and enforcement are crucial to mitigating the health risks associated with HFCs. Nigeria updated its NDC in 2021 to include HFC as a new gas to reduce emissions.
There are many alternatives to hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), including hydrocarbons, e.g., isobutane, propane, and propylene, used in refrigerators and cooling systems. Ammonia is also a safe and energy-efficient alternative and is used in chillers. Hydrofluoroolefins (HFOs) are HFCs that break down quickly after being emitted, so they have a minimal greenhouse effect. They are used as refrigerant in car air conditioners. Low-Global Warming Potential HFCs can also be used as an alternative.
While HFCs have played a role in reducing ozone depletion, their significant contribution to global warming and potential health risks cannot be ignored. It is essential to continue efforts to phase down HFCs and find more environmentally friendly alternatives. By doing so, we can protect our planet and health from these chemicals' hidden dangers.
