I was not familiar with the term "cultural Christianity" until the leader of the Conservative party in the UK, Kemi Badenoch. Since that statement, my research revealed that some public personalities, like Elon Musk and Richard Dawkins, have at one time or another described themselves as cultural Christians. So, what is cultural Christianity?
Cultural Christianity refers to adopting Christian values, traditions, and identity without necessarily adhering to the spiritual or religious aspects of the faith. This phenomenon is increasingly prevalent in contemporary society, where individuals identify with Christian culture for its moral and social frameworks rather than for religious devotion.
Recent data reveals a significant rise in the number of individuals identifying as cultural Christians. For instance, in the United States, the percentage of self-identified evangelicals who seldom or never attend church has increased from 3% in 2008 to 17% in 2023. This shift indicates a growing faction of cultural Christians who prioritize tradition and conservative values over religious practices.

Cultural Christians often advocate for conventional family structures, tradition, and minimal government intervention, aligning themselves with conservative political ideologies. This alignment has led to increased political engagement among cultural Christians, influencing policies and elections.
Cultural Christianity represents a significant shift in how individuals engage with Christian identity and values. While it offers a sense of belonging and moral guidance, its political relevance cannot be overlooked. As cultural Christianity continues to grow, its impact on political landscapes and societal norms will likely become more pronounced.
